Thanks for the compliment!

Ooops, today is Friday. I really need to quit my jobs so I have more time for books and this blog.

I wouldn't have been much help, though. I just have cats. I know W.H. Smith has a big kid's section, but I really can't remember seeing a section for kids in any of the second-hand shops.

I hope you manage to find some anyway and have a lovely weekend here!

I'm beginning to suspect that every population is the kind that will abandon a small shop in exchange for freshly painted bookcases and a muffin counter. The only difference is that some populations feel guilty about it, and talk about how they should really go back there at some stage. Then, when the little shops close down, they just say things like, "Yes, well...their customer service was never that great anyway."

Well, you have to admit, they both have words in them. Quite a few of the same ones, in fact. Just mixed together differently. Using a pair of scissors and some tape you could rearrange them yourself however you like. Sounds like you were just being difficult.

Yes, it's the same W.H. Smith! The evil chain store that's part of the Chapters/Coles mega-corporation of evilness. The last city I lived in in Canada had a bit of a reputation for its wide variety of independent bookshops.

Two enormous Chapters stores moved in and within one year most of those independents were gone, within five, all were gone. I left.

(Okay, for a lot of reasons, but I'll bet they were probably related to the fact that the local population were the kind of people that would abandon the small shops.)

Thank you! The only one I've been to is the Red Wheelbarrow. Is that W. H. Smith the same chain that exists in the UK? I tried to buy a copy of the Times Literary Supplement in the Southampton branch once. The man told me they didn't stock it, but tried to sell me the Educational Supplement instead. Because litriture, edyoocation, it's all the same, innit?
